Primer Interactive Preview Instructions

We are building an endless game called Primer that steers its player toward a more interesting life to become an effective member of society. The Primer also reacts to its owners' environment and teaches them what they need to know to survive and grow.

  1. Install the Unity3D web player plugin. Reload the page or restart your browser if necessary.
  2. Click the banner above and you'll see an interactive 3D preview of the Primer's central Worldtree, Axia.
  3. Once your Unity 3D plugin loads and you can see the game world.
  4. Click in the box to begin controlling your character.
  5. Move the mouse to look around, and use the W A S D keys to move around.

This is only a limited non-playable preview of the mobile-optimized version of the game which is in alpha development. In this preview, all of the doors remain locked, but in the full game you can explore the past, present and future to go from the emergence of the cosmos to the ascent to the singularity and all the challenges in between.

If you want to arrange a private demo of the latest version of the actual running game world, contact us.

Omniplatform Support

Primer is an endless game that supports all major gaming platforms in a single cohesive game experience that picks up seamlessly from one platform to the other, including the ultimate game platform of all: Actualia.

Social Support

PC and Mac users can play the game online via web browser and client download. They can also play it integrated with their social gaming network on Facebook and Steam, connecting with their friends lists to invite other players to join them.

Mobile Support

Primer is really at its best as a mobile game, being played out in the world with augmented reality experiences that relate to the world around you. Primer will support iPhone, Android and Ubuntu Netbooks including tablets.

Console Support

All major consoles will be supported by Primer allowing the rich living room experience. We'll support the gestural controllers of XBox's Natal and the Nintendo Wiimote.

Developer Support

Primer will allow web and game developers to integrate OpenPrimer learning technology. Game developers can integrate OpenPrimer's Unity code via Javascript and C# or call the OpenPrimer API from other engines like Unreal Engine. Web developers will be able to integrate the server-side back-end for OpenPrimer games using web development tools like Drupal and Python.

Google Offers Cloud-Based Learning Engine

Google has launched a service that could bring machine learning to many more apps. Google Prediction API provides a simple way for developers to create software that learns how to handle incoming data.

For example, the Google-hosted algorithms could be trained to sort e-mails into categories for “complaints” and “praise” using a dataset that provides many examples of both kinds. Future e-mails could then be screened by software using that API, and handled accordingly.

Google’s service provides a kind of machine-learning black box– data goes in one end, and predictions come out the other. There are three basic commands: one to upload a collection of data, another telling the service to learn what it can from it, and a third to submit new data for the system to react to based on what it learned.

Ben Goertzel: AI Meets the Metaverse: Teachable AI Agents Living in Virtual Worlds

I just met Ben Goertzel at the Singularity Summit 2010 SF. I learned a lot from him face-to-face and I've been catching up with his cutting-edge game AGI work. As a starting point into his decades of research, I recommend this article Ben Goertzel wrote: a fascinating piece on games as the frontier of AGI and and his Nova Mente framework for AGI in virtual worlds on KurzeilAI.net:

Online virtual worlds have the power to accelerate and catalyze the development of artificial general intelligence (AGI). As AGIs involved in this metaverse become progressively more intelligent from their interaction with the social network of human beings and reach human-level intelligence (the Singularity), they will already be part of the human social network. If we build them right and teach them right, they will greet us with open arms.

I am one of the minority of the human race who believes that a technological Singularity is almost surely coming. And, as this essay hopefully has made clear, I am also part of an even smaller minority who believes that the most probable path for the Singularity’s arrival involves AGI in the online metaverse. I suspect that both of these minorities will become larger and larger as the next decade unfolds.

This is awesome stuff and anybody interested in how game AI can spark the Singularity should read the rest, along with A Positive Singularity In 10 Years:

Right now we have a handful of people working on Novamente full time.  What we’re doing now – as well as building out the basic AI -- is teaching Novamente to be a virtual baby.  It lives in a 3D simulation world and tries to learn simple stuff like playing fetch and finding objects.  It’s a long way from there to the Singularity – but there’s a definite plan for getting from here to there.

The current staffing of the project is not enough.  If we keep going at this rate, we’ll get there eventually – but we won’t have the Singularity in ten years.

But I still think we can do it – I’m keeping my fingers crossed.  We don’t need a Manhattan Project scale effort, all we need right now is the funding to get a dozen or so of the right people on the project full time.

I’ve talked more about AI than about the Singularity or positiveness.  Let me get back to those.

It should be obvious that if you can create an AI vastly smarter than humans, then pretty much anything is possible.

What Went Right, What Went Wrong: Lessons from Season 1 of EVOKE

Posted by Jane McGonigal on 26 Jul under Behind the scenes

For the next 3 days, we’re holding our Post-Vita meeting for the first season of EVOKE here in San Francisco. The lead team has gathered together to assess the first season and power up for future seasons and translations. We wanted to share with you our thoughts and ideas as we go, so we’re creating documents on the fly and live blogging them. We want to be as transparent as possible to help other social good games learn from our EVOKE experiences.

So first up: Here’s our top list of things that went right during EVOKE (and why – so we can do it again!) and things that went wrong (with at least one good idea for how we could improve next time.) In the great tradition of Game Developer Magazine, each lead team member made their own list of Top What Went Rights and Top What Went Wrongs. Please know: The solutions/recommendations aren’t necessarily locked in for future EVOKE seasons or experiences; we will continue to discuss and brainstorm, so please feel free to add your feedback and ideas in the comments.

Bill Gates: In Five Years The Best Education Will Come From The Web

Bill Gates: In Five Years The Best Education Will Come From The Web:

Bill Gates thinks something is going to die too.

No, it’s not physical books like Nicholas Negroponte — instead, Gates thinks the idea of young adults having to go to universities in order to get an education is going to go away relatively soon. Well, provided they’re self-motivated learners.

“Five years from now on the web for free you’ll be able to find the best lectures in the world,” Gates said at the Techonomy conference in Lake Tahoe, CA today. “It will be better than any single university,” he continued.

He believes that no matter how you came about your knowledge, you should get credit for it. Whether it’s an MIT degree or if you got everything you know from lectures on the web, there needs to be a way to highlight that.

He made sure to say that educational institutions are still vital for children, K-12. He spoke glowingly about charter schools, where kids can spend up to 80% of their time deeply engaged with learning.

But college needs to be less “place-based,” according to Gates. Well, except for the parties, he joked.

But his overall point is that it’s just too expensive and too hard to get these upper-level educations. And soon place-based college educations will be five times less important than they are today.

One particular problem with the education system according to Gates is text books. Even in grade schools, they can be 300 pages for a book about math. “They’re giant, intimidating books,” he said. “I look at them and think: what on Earth is in there?“

According to Gates, our text books are three times longer than the equivalents in Asia. And yet they’re beating us in many ways with education. The problem is that these things are built by committee, and more things are simply added on top of what’s already in there.

Gates said that technology is the only way to bring education back under control and expand it.

The Open Primer Game Sneak Previewed at Noisebridge.net's 5 Minutes of Fame

Alex Peake presented The Open Primer in a sneak preview at Noisebridge.net's 5 Minutes of Fame on July 15th. My presentation goes from 7:00 to 17:00. The mic is booming because nobody is doing sound check and you can't hear audience laughter or applause in this microphone mix. We'll probably supply our own lapel mic for talks in future to get a better result.

Rezzable has Second Life OpenSim playable through a Unity3D-based viewer for a museum!

Rezzable has Second Life OpenSim playable through a Unity3D-based viewer for a museum! Here's what they say about it:
As we mentioned a few weeks ago, we have been hammering away on connecting the Unity3D viewer to our OpenSim servers. It works. You can see it for yourself if you go over to http://heritage-key.com . Arrive in the virtual gallery and check out a selection of artefacts like King Tut’s death mask, Stonehenge sarasens and a Terracotta Warrior and also learn a bit about Ancient World history. The main goal here is to give people a taste of what is on offer in the fuller version of our virtual online areas.

Our challenge is to get mainstream online users into virtual online experiences. Often people don’t know what is even possible, but fear the hassle of finding out. This new viewer capability lowers the hurdle significantly. Is this the future for museums? Maybe?
The region content in this scene is identical to the Preview region that we have running for guests on Heritage Key, so you could compare yourself. In fact it would be possible to have Unity3D sessions concurrent with the mod’d SL viewer sessions. We need to do a little more work on this, but it already works.

Imagine teaching filmmaking via iPhone game

A beautifully done short film has now been shot and edited entirely with an iPhone 4's HD camera and iOS iMovie software. Imagine teaching a Primer player how to make movies in an iPhone game that gets them to use iMovie and tell interesting stories, then upload their finished videos for peer enjoyment and review to advance further in the game.

20 careers that will make the future less dystopian

The future is a beautiful place - and you can help make it that way, while picking up a paycheck at the same time. Here are 20 jobs that will help the human race avoid dystopia!

We all want to make a difference in the world, and it would be awesome to be able to get paid for contributing to humanity's future. So next time you're between jobs and reskilling or retraining, here are some possibilities you might want to look into. We've divided them into a few basic categories.

IO9 has the career paths with videos! And this isn't in no way not a hint about the story and gameplay of Primer.

Imagine editing geometry live a la Second Life

Primer's going to feature a Unity game development curriculum and tools for user-generated content creation. One of the coolest tools I've seen so far for Unity is this new project to put Sketchup-like editing tools into the Unity editor itself! Thanks to AngryAnt of Unity.
